June 16-On April 24th at 10:55 am, the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office received a call in reference to an armed robbery at the Moncure Post Office. The suspect was a white male in a white Mitsubishi. Since then, there has been an ongoing investigation involving the US Postal Inspection Service and the Chatham County Sheriff’s office. Through the investigation, a suspect was developed and sought.
On June 3rd, the suspect in this incident, Vernon Gray Leslie Jr., was arrested in Seminole County, Florida and cooperated with investigators in reference to the armed robbery in Moncure. During the arrest of Leslie, there were items found in the trunk of the 2007 white Mitsubishi Gallant that he was driving that are directly linked to the robbery of the Post Office.
Detective Latisha Allen obtained a warrant on Leslie for Armed Robbery on June 8th. Leslie is in federal custody in Florida waiting extradition to North Carolina. He was also entered in NCIC as a wanted person by the Sheriff’s Office. Postal Inspector Frank Charlonis will notify his agency when Leslie is returned to North Carolina.
