February 3-Donald Louis Scotton, 53, of 175 Fletcher Siler Road, Siler City was shot to death around 8:00 pm Saturday night at the residence of his nephew, Christopher Matthews, 35. Chatham County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to 131 Fletcher Siler Road in reference to a shooting and when they arrived found Scotton deceased in the front yard of the home. Witnesses on the scene stated that Matthews and Scotton had a verbal altercation that escalated and resulted in the shooting. Deputies believe that Matthews may have been stabbed at some point during the scuffle. Investigators collected several items of evidence from the scene, including shell casings from a shotgun and several knives but did not find a gun. Witnesses also stated that Matthews ran into a wooded area near the home after the shooting. Search dogs were used and tracked Matthews to nearby residences but he had left by the time officers arrived. Deputies are looking for Matthews, who is still believed to be in the Siler City area. Alcohol is believed to have played a factor in this incident.

An autopsy was conducted this morning at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill and found that Scotton died from a single gunshot wound to the chest. Deputies hold a 1st degree murder warrant on Matthews.
