DEPUTIES ARREST 6 DURING OPERATION SAFE STREET III

January 19- 35 employees from the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office conducted a countywide roundup operation and other special duties on Friday night in attempts to serve warrants on people that have been difficult to find and to check on convicted sex offenders at their homes. They also supplied additional help at a local high school basketball game after hearing of a disturbance that occurred last week.

Arrest teams were put together and sent out to find defendants wanted for various criminal violations. These violators are sometimes difficult to locate in a timely manner and the Sheriff’s Office uses various techniques to locate them.

25 convicted sex offenders were checked on by 2 different teams. State law mandates that sex offenders check into the Sheriff’s Office twice a year to insure all information is collected and updated. Sheriff Webster instituted a policy 3 years ago that requires deputies to do a face to face check with convicted sex offenders at their homes at least twice a year and two telephone contacts a year above the state requirements.
