What is CRIMESTOPPERS? CRIMESTOPPERS is a program in which members of the community, the media, law enforcement agencies, and business work together to solve crime. Citizens are encouraged, via cash rewards and promise of anonymity from the CrimeStoppers Board, to provide information leading to the arrest and indictment of criminals. Who Is Involved? CRIMESTOPPERS is made up of volunteers in Chatham County, your neighbors, who are willing to take action against crime. We want our community to be a safe one and are willing to make it that way. A board of directors/members of our community who have volunteered to give their time and talents to the program administer CRIMESTOPPERS. How Does It Work? Each week, facts pertaining to an unsolved crime are publicized via radio, newspaper, and televised crime reenactments, and citizens are encouraged to call CRIMESTOPPERS with any information about the case or any unsolved crime. Each informant is given a code number so that confidentiality and anonymity are ensured. Rewards of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest of a criminal provide incentive to participants. Who Benefits? All of us benefit. A criminal who is taken from the mainstream of our community is not a threat to you, your children or your business. And, in a community where citizens work together to solve crimes, the threat of swift, sure punishment serves as a strong deterrent to would-be criminals. Thousands of dollars worth of stolen property is recovered each year through CRIMESTOPPERS' information, often amounting to ten times the amount CRIMESTOPPERS paid out to solve the crimes nation wide. |
